Choosing The Right Storage Facility
January 25th, 2012
- Think about location. Are you going to need to access your storage locker frequently? If so, aim for someplace nearby.
- Consider how much space you really need. Self-storage facilities rent units in all different sizes.
- Be sure to ask facility representatives how and when you can access your unit. Ask about holiday hours as well
- Also ask about climate controlled units. If you’re storing anything valuable or delicate – like antique furniture or important documents – it could be warped by being stored in space that’s too hot, too cold or too humid. For an extra cost, most public storage facilities can set you up with a unit where temperature and humidity are restricted.

Planning makes perfect.
Take inventory. Itemize what you plan to store. Then you can determine; storage for short or long term and the unit size you will need.
Consider location. Is your storage facility close? Hours of operation and access?
Establish a budget. Econo offers Sky Lockers at a considerable savings compared to regular units.
The Sky Lockers are accessed by moving a rolling set of stairs to the door of your unit. Many sizes available to suit your needs.
Storage solutions for storing specific items
November 17th, 2011
Appliances
A refrigerator or freezer should be stored with the door secured slightly open. Some goods can be stored inside large appliances and boxes can be stacked on top of stoves or refrigerators.
Bedding, Clothing, Curtains, Drapes and Linens
Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storage to avoid permanent damage. Curtains, drapes and some clothing such as suits or formal wear should be stored on hangers in wardrobe boxes. As an alternative these items can be carefully folded and stored in dressers or boxes.
Bicycles, Equipment, Tools and Other Metal Items
All equipment needs to be stored clean. To prevent rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a few drops of machine oil.
Books, Files, Records and Documents
Use smaller boxes and do not overload. Fragile items should not be packed in the same box with books, files, record or documents. Pack books flat to protect their spines. Use packing popcorn to fill in the empty spaces in the box. Pallets placed on concrete floors help to prevent moisture absorption and improves air movement through your unit for heating and ventilation.
Delicate and Fragile Items
For added protection place a layer of bubble wrap in the bottom of the box. Each delicate and item should be individually wrapped; placing the most delicate or Fragile item near the top of the box. Fill in empty spaces with packing popcorn. Place an additional layer of bubble wrap on the top. Clearly label the box Fragile and place the box on top of other stored items.
Fabric Items
All items need to be clean to prevent damage. Wardrobe boxes help to store and protect items directly on hangers.
Food or Scented Items
Protect your belongings from pests, avoid storing food items, perishables or scented candles in your unit. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Furniture
Place a pallet, corrugated cardboard, mat or plastic sheet on the floor to protect furniture. Stand sofas and mattresses on end if possible. Disassemble beds and tables, wrap table legs to protect. If a table will not disassemble, place padding on the floor and place the upside down with legs up. Use dresser tops for stacking boxes and dresser drawers for storing linens or small delicate items. Most lightweight chairs can be stacked seat to seat. Finally, place a light cotton dust cover (bed sheet) on your furniture.
Heirlooms and Antiques
Goods of Priceless value, such as family heirlooms, antiques or paintings which require a specific controlled environment are not recommended to be stored at our facilities.
